Expert Tips for a Well-Organized Closet

How to Organize Your Closet
How to Organize Your Closet + Closet Organizing

A messy closet can hide what you have, making it hard to find something to wear and cost you extra time when you’re trying to get out of the house. Here’s a list of tips that can help get you started in the right direction regardless of how much space you have to work with.

1. Start from scratch if possible

The most effective way to clean a closet is to take everything out. That way, you can start with a clean slate and see everything you own. It will also be easier to see the space you have with nothing in the way and get an idea of how to organize it when you start putting things back in.

2. Sort everything into categories

Make a separate pile for each:

  • Keep

  • Donate

  • Sell

  • Repair or dry clean

  • Recycle or trash

This will help speed up the process as you decision each item. If you get stuck and aren’t sure what to do with something, consider having a separate box for the “Maybe” items and give yourself a time limit to get rid of anything you haven’t worn.

3. Be honest about what you wear and use

  • Have you worn it in the past year?

  • Is it worn out or stained?

  • Does it fit comfortably?

  • Does it feel good to wear it?

  • Would you buy it again?

If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go. Don’t forget to apply this process to anything that you have in dresser drawers too.

4. Clean everything before items go back in

Vacuum and wipe down all the surfaces, including the baseboards. Check that the hangers don’t have any dust before putting things away again.

5. Use the right hangers

Make sure you have padded hangers for things like sweaters that can get stretched out and non-slip hangers for things that tend to fall off easily. Heavier items like coats will need stronger hangers like wood or sturdy plastic. Slimmer hangers save space so use those wherever you can.

6. Organize by item, then by color

If there are non-clothing items that came out of your closet that can be stored elsewhere in the house, consider moving them to create more space if you need it. Then group like items together - tops, bottoms, dresses etc.

7. Maximize vertical space

Most closets have more vertical space than you realize and when empty you’ll be able to visualize what options you have.

  • Overhead shelves for seasonal items

  • Hanging organizers for shoes or bags

  • Shoe racks

  • Shelf dividers to keep stacks neat

  • Hooks for belts, hats, scarves or robes

8. Contain small items

Smaller items can go in drawers if you have them. If you need to keep them on a shelf, use clear or labeled bins so you know what’s in them.

  • Athletic wear

  • Accessories

  • Clutches

  • Swimsuits

  • Socks and intimates

9. Maintain seasonally

Depending on how many clothes you have and where you live, you may want to rotate seasonally. Keep your current season items in front and easy to reach while the out of season pieces can be moved into the back or tucked away.
