Holiday Simplicity: Creating Space for What Matters Most

The holidays have a way of getting away from most of us. In the beginning we have big ideas of how we want to decorate, all the things we want to do and all the seasonal treats we’ll eat before they’re gone. Then reality hits that there are only so many hours in a day. Before we know it we’re exhausted and it’s over in the blink of an eye. 

But here’s the truth we all need to hear—the holidays don’t have to be complicated to be special. I’m not going to list tips to keep you organized so you can do more stuff. I’d rather see you take some time out for yourself and make things a little easier to savor. 

1. Let Go of the Pressure to Make Everything Magical

Holiday perfection is a myth created by TV and social media. The best times are less fussy and usually happen more naturally, like having a spur of the moment coffee with a friend or realizing that you have time for a walk on a sunny day. 

Take a breath. Life flows easier when you’re fully present, not when everything is scheduled, or glittered and gilded for that matter. 

2. Choose What Matters (and Skip the Rest)

Saying yes to everything usually ends up being too much. Ask yourself, if it were up to you, what would you prioritize and what would you decline? 

Do you keep doing things just because you always have? And, do you really want to do all of them? 

What would happen if:

  • You simplified your décor and didn’t cover every surface?

  • You didn’t bake for every event? 

  • You skipped some of the gift exchanges and just spent time together instead? 

  • You let a tradition go this year, or added a different one that resonates more? 

  • You didn’t need a separate outfit for each party? 

3. Small Moments Count More

Most people don’t remember the color-coordinated table settings or the theme of your décor and gift wrapping. They remember how they felt

So prioritize the small things that bring connection and peace:

  • A slow morning 

  • A phone call to someone you miss

  • A moment of gratitude 

  • A visit with a friend or neighbor

  • A snuggle with your fur babies

4. Simplicity Makes Space for Joy

When you strip away the excess, you give yourself time to enjoy the season instead of feeling like you’re in a marathon.

This year, consider gifting yourself simplicity:

  • A simpler schedule

  • A simpler menu

  • A simpler shopping list

  • A simpler expectation of what the holidays “should” be

Because the season isn’t about doing more. It’s about taking the time to enjoy more.
